What Is Included in a Semi-Truck PM Service?
A PM service is a planned maintenance visit that helps a fleet or owner-operator keep track of inspection, repair, and maintenance needs before they become an unexpected interruption. It is not one universal checklist: the right scope depends on the truck, trailer, mileage or hours, engine and component manufacturer guidance, use conditions, and any symptoms the driver has reported.

What does a PM service help you organize?
Federal maintenance rules require motor carriers to systematically inspect, repair, and maintain the vehicles under their control. The related records need to identify the vehicle, show the nature and due date of maintenance operations, and record the date and nature of inspections, repairs, and maintenance. A practical PM visit gives the operator a defined time to review those needs with the shop.
| Maintenance area | Why it belongs in the conversation |
|---|---|
| Reported leaks and fluid concerns | They help the shop decide what needs inspection before the next scheduled interval. |
| Brakes, tires, wheels, and wheel ends | These are safety-related areas that should not wait until a roadside failure. |
| Lights and electrical concerns | Warning lamps, charging concerns, and trailer-connection issues are easier to investigate with a clear symptom history. |
| Steering, suspension, and handling | Pulling, vibration, unusual tire wear, or a recent impact can change what the inspection needs to cover. |
| Manufacturer-recommended service items | The truck’s make, engine, mileage or hours, and operating conditions determine the correct interval and parts. |
What should you bring to a PM appointment?
Bring the truck and trailer information your operation uses, current mileage or hours, maintenance records when available, and a short list of driver-reported concerns. Mention warning lamps, air leaks, hard starts, vibration, braking changes, tire wear, electrical problems, or recent repairs. This keeps the visit focused on the actual vehicle rather than a generic checklist alone.
How is PM different from an annual DOT inspection?
PM is an operational maintenance plan that can be scheduled around the vehicle’s needs and manufacturer guidance. An annual DOT inspection is a separate periodic inspection requirement for applicable commercial vehicles. One does not automatically replace the other, and a PM visit may identify a repair that needs attention before the next required inspection.
